The chest radiograph shows hyperinflation consistent with emphysema. Diminished vesicular breath sounds occur because of the destruction of numerous alveoli in the disease process of emphysema. As a result, there is a significant decrease in the number of available alveoli for gas exchange, resulting in diminished vesicular breath sounds.
