Unlike in adults, in whom atherosclerosis accounts for 90% of cases of renal artery stenosis, fibromuscular dysplasia is more commonly found in children. Fibromuscular dysplasia tends to affect girls and women aged 15 to 50 years and mostly involves the distal two thirds of the renal artery and its branches; it is characterized as beaded, aneurysmal appearance on angiography.
