Fever, Hip Pain, and Vomiting in a 7-year-old boy

	Answer 1 Transient synovitis. Transient synovitis is the most common cause of acute hip pain in this age-group, accounting for approximately 80% of cases.1 However, transient synovitis remains a diagnosis of exclusion. Septic arthritis and slipped capital femoral epiphysis are also commonly seen. Hip pain, unlike abdominal pain, is usually fairly specific for local pathology. Click here to return to the questions
