Transient synovitis is the most common cause of acute hip pain in this age-group, accounting for approximately 80% of cases.1 However, transient synovitis remains a diagnosis of exclusion. Septic arthritis and slipped capital femoral epiphysis are also commonly seen. Hip pain, unlike abdominal pain, is usually fairly specific for local pathology.
