Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
CT scan is a better initial study than ultrasound for detecting stroke; however, MRI with DWI is better able to define the extent of the lesion. Furthermore, DWI can detect stroke within a short time from the onset of the insult. Although MRA contributes to delineating the extent of a lesion, it is not adequate without MRI with DWI.
